As someone who has lived in South Korea for most of my life, I have always been aware of the tension and fear surrounding North Korea and its leader, Kim Jong Un. The totalitarian regime and human rights abuses that occur under his rule are widely known and condemned by the international community.
However, as Halloween approaches, I have noticed a disturbing trend of people wearing costumes depicting Kim Jong Un. While some may argue that it is simply harmless fun or a way to show political satire, I believe that it is important to understand the negative implications of such costumes.
Firstly, dressing up as Kim Jong Un normalizes and trivializes the atrocities committed by his regime. It reduces the severity of the situation in North Korea and disregards the suffering of its citizens. As someone with family members who have escaped from North Korea, I find it incredibly disrespectful and hurtful to see my culture being used as a costume for entertainment.
Moreover, these costumes perpetuate harmful stereotypes about Asian people. They reinforce the idea that all Asians are authoritarian leaders or brainwashed followers without any individual agency. This not only perpetuates racism but also ignores the diversity within Asian cultures.
